EID MILAD CELEBRATIONS OR INNOVATIONS?
FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND, ANALYSE, REFLECT UPON and EMBRACE ALLAH’S GUIDANCE
Questions to ponder:
Has ALLAH The Exalted commanded the Believers to Celebrate Prophet's Birthday?
Did the Prophet celebrate his Birthday during 40 years of his life, prior to Prophethood?
Did the Prophet celebrate his Birthday during the 23 years of his Prophethood?
Did the Righteous Caliphs celebrate Prophet's Birthday?
Did the Companions celebrate Prophet's Birthday?
Did the Taba'een celebrate the Prophet's Birthday?
EID MILAD CELEBRATIONS OR INNOVATIONS?
[ALLAH’S Quran 17:36 - Ali Unal] “Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge (whether it is good or bad), and refrain from groundless assertions and conjectures. Surely the hearing, the sight, and the heart – each of these is subject to questioning about it (you are answerable, and will be called to account, for each of these on the Day of Judgment).”
[17:36 Commentary YUSUF ALI] “Idle curiosity may lead us to nose into evil, through our ignorance that it is evil. We must guard against every such danger. We must only hear the things that are known to us to be of good report, and see things that are good and instructive and entertain in our hearts feelings or in our minds ideas that we have reason to expect will be spiritually profitable to us. We shall be called to account for the exercise of every faculty that has been given to us. This goes a little farther than a famous sculpture on a Japanese temple in which three monkeys are shown as putting their hands to their ears, eyes, and mouths, respectively, to show that they were not prepared to hear any evil, see any evil, or speak any evil. Here idle curiosity is condemned. Futility is to be avoided even if it does not reach the degree of positive evil.”
Question – What is the Status of Eid-Milad in Quran and Sunnah?
Answer - [ALLAH’S Quran 33:56 – Pickthall] “Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation.”
[33:56 Commentary YUSUF ALI] “God and His angels honour and bless the Prophet as the greatest of men. We are asked to honour and bless him all the more because he took upon himself to suffer the sorrow and afflictions of this life in order to guide us to God’s Mercy and the highest inner Life.”
ALLAH, The Exalted has Commanded the Believers to ask ALLAH for his Peace and Blessings for The Prophet [PBUH] and as such, to love The prophet of Islam is an integral Part of The Religion of Islam. But we need to ponder what kind of love and respect Merciful ALLAH has enjoined on the Believers to exercise for the Prophet of Islam?
[ALLAH’S Quran 33:21 – Vickar Ahamed] “In the Messenger (Muhammad) of Allah, you have a beautiful (pattern of conduct) and example for one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who Praises Allah much (often and deeply).”
[33:21 Commentary ASAD] “This verse (and the passage that follows) connects with verses 9-11 above, and especially with verse 11 - "there and then were the believers tried, and shaken with a shock severe" - which summarizes, as it were, their experiences during the critical days and weeks of the War of the Trench. Although it is addressed, in the first instance, to those early defenders of Medina who were thus exhorted to emulate the Prophet's faith, courage and steadfastness, the above verse is timeless in its import and its validity for all situations and conditions. - Since the verb rajawa, as well as the noun-forms rajw, rujuww and raja' derived from it, carry the connotation of both "hope" and "fear" (or "awe"), I have rendered yarju accordingly.
Thus Merciful ALLAH has Informed the Believers to strive for emulating the attributes of The Prophet of Islam, which are Pleasing To ALLAH. It is incumbent upon Believers to follow and practice what the Prophet of Islam taught the believers and what he practiced during his life time.
Question – ALLAH'S Command; Remembrance of ALLAH or The Prophet?
Answer – [ALLAH’S Quran 33:41 – Al-Muntakhab] “O you who have conformed to Islam, apply remembrance to Allah as often as you can."
Question – What did the Prophet of Islam order?
Answer - Narrated Qais: Jarir said, "We were with the Prophet and he looked at the moon--full-moon--and said, 'Certainly you will see your Lord as you see this moon and you will have no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business, etc.) a prayer before the sun-rise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset ('Asr), you must do so.' He then recited Allah's Statement: And celebrate the praises Of your Lord before The rising of the sun And before (its) setting." (50.39) Isma'il said, "Offer those prayers and do not miss them." (Bukhari, Book #10, Hadith #529)
Narrated Mujahid: Ibn Abbas said, "Allah ordered His Prophet to celebrate Allah's praises after all prayers." He refers to His Statement: 'After the prayers.' (50.40) (Bukhari, Book #60, Hadith #375)
Jarir b. Abdullah is reported to have said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) that he looked at the full moon and observed: You shall see your Lord as you are seeing this moon, and you will not be harmed by seeing Him. So if you can, do not let -yourselves be overpowered in case of prayer observed before the rising of the sun and its setting, i. e. the 'Asr prayer and the morning prayer. Jarir then recited it:" celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before Its setting" (xx. 130). (Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #1322)
In my humble opinion, remembrance of the Prophet of Islam in the form of Celebration of Eid-Milad, once every year is deviation and INNOVATION in the Principles and Practices of Islam.
ALLAH, The Exalted has Ordained for each community a different Law and a different way of life.
ALLAH’S LAWS ARE UNCHANGING
[ALLAH’S Quran 5:48 - Asad] “And unto thee [O Prophet] have We vouchsafed this divine writ, setting forth the truth, confirming the truth of whatever there still remains of earlier revelations and determining what is true therein. Judge, then, between the followers of earlier revelation in accordance with what God has bestowed from on high, and do not follow their errant views, forsaking the truth that has come unto thee. Unto every one of you have We appointed a [different] law and way of life. And if God had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community: but [He willed it otherwise] in order to test you by means of what He has vouchsafed unto, you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! Unto God you all must return; and then He will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ.”
[5:48 Commentary ASAD] “The expression "every one of you" denotes the various communities of which mankind is composed. The term shir'ah (or shari ah) signifies, literally, "the way to a watering-place" (from which men and animals derive the element indispensable to their life), and is used in the Qur'an to denote a system of law necessary for a community's social and spiritual welfare. The term minhaj, on the other hand, denotes an "open road", usually in an abstract sense: that is, "a way of life". The terms shir'ah and minhaj are more restricted in their meaning than the term din, which comprises not merely the laws relating to a particular religion but also the basic, unchanging spiritual truths which, according to the Qur'an, have been preached by every one of God's apostles, while the particular body of laws (shir'ah or shari'ah) promulgated through them, and the way of life (minhaj) recommended by them, varied in accordance with the exigencies of the time and of each community's cultural development. This "unity in diversity" is frequently stressed in the Qur'an (e.g., in the first sentence of 2:148, in 21:92-93, or in 23:52 ff.). Because of the universal applicability and textual incorruptibility of its teachings - as well as of the fact that the Prophet Muhammad is "the seal of all prophets", i.e., the last of them (see 33:40) - the Qur'an represents the culminating point of all revelation and offers the final, perfect way to spiritual fulfilment. This uniqueness of the Qur'anic message does not, however, preclude all adherents of earlier faiths from attaining to God's grace: for - as the Qur'an so often points out - those among them who believe uncompromisingly in the One God and the Day of Judgment (i.e., in individual moral responsibility) and live righteously "need have no fear, and neither shall they grieve"
[ALLAH’S Quran 35:43 – Faridul Haque] “...............So you will never find the traditions of Allah changing; and you will never find Allah’s law being avoided”
Question - Which Celebrations Did The Prophet of Islam Practice?
Answer - Only ID-UL-FITR and ID-UL-ADHA
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: I have been commanded to celebrate festival ('Id) on the day of sacrifice, which Allah, Most High, has appointed for this community. A man said: If I do not find except a she-goat or a she-camel borrowed for milk or other benefits, should I sacrifice it? He said: No, but you should clip your hair , and nails, trim your moustaches, and shave your pubes. This is all your sacrifice in the eyes of Allah, Most High. (Abudawud, Book #15, Hadith #2783)
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet used to proceed to the Musalla on the days of Id-ul-fitr and Id-ul-Adha; the first thing to begin with was the prayer and after that he would stand in front of the people and the people would keep sitting in their rows. Then he would preach to them, advise them and give them orders, (i.e. Khutba). And after that if he wished to send an army for an expedition, he would do so; or if he wanted to give and order, he would do so, and then depart. The people followed this tradition till I went out with Marwan, the Governor of Medina, for the prayer of Id-ul-Adha or Id-ul-fitr. When we reached the Musalla, there was a pulpit made by Kathir bin As-Salt. Marwan wanted to get up on that pulpit before the prayer. I got hold of his clothes but he pulled them and ascended the pulpit and delivered the Khutba before the prayer. I said to him, "By Allah, you have changed (the Prophet's tradition)." He replied, "O Abu Sa'id! Gone is that which you know." I said, "By Allah! What I know is better than what I do not know." Marwan said, "People do not sit to listen to our Khutba after the prayer, so I delivered the Khutba before the prayer." (Bukhari, Book #15, Hadith #76)
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle used to offer the prayer of 'Id-ul-Adha and 'Id-ul-fitr and then deliver the Khutba after the prayer. (Bukhari, Book #15, Hadith #77)
'Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that (his father) 'Umar b. Khattab asked Abu Waqid al-Laithi what the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to recite on 'Id-ul-Adha and 'Id-ul-fitr. He said: He used to recite in them:" Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an" (Surah 1)," The Hour drew near, and the moon was rent asunder" (Surah liv.). (Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #1936)
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade to observe fast on these two days. 'Id-ul-Adha bi and 'Id-ul-fitr. (Muslim, Book #006, Hadith #2534)
(Abu Dawood, Book #15, Hadith #2783)
Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) and they said, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh," On that, the Prophet said to his companions, "You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day." (Bukhari, Book #60, Hadith #202)
Qaza'a related from Abu Sa'id. He said: I heard from him (Abu Sa'id) a hadith which impressed me, and I said to him: Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)? Thereupon he said: (Is it possible) that (I should) say about the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) that which I have not heard? I heard him saying: It is not proper to fast on two days, Adha and Fitr (at the end) of ramadan. (Muslim, Book #006, Hadith #2535)
Question – Did The Prophet of Islam warn The believers about Innovations in Religion?
Answer – Prophet of Islam’s Warnings about Innovations in Religion
[Hadith, Bukhari, Book #49, Hadith #861] “Narrated Aisha: Allah's Apostle said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected."
[Hadith, Sunan Abudawud, Book #40, Hadith#4590] “..........You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.”
[Abudawud, Book # 39, Hadith # 4515] "Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: Qays ibn Abbad and Ashtar went to Ali and said to him: Did the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) give you any instruction about anything for which he did not give any instruction to the people in general? He said: No, except what is contained in this document of mine. Musaddad said: He then took out a document. Ahmad said: A document from the sheath of his sword. It contained: The lives of all Muslims are equal; they are one hand against others; the lowliest of them can guarantee their protection. Beware, a Muslim must not be killed for an infidel, nor must one who has been given a covenant be killed while his covenant holds. If anyone introduces an innovation, he will be responsible for it. If anyone introduces an innovation or gives shelter to a man who introduces an innovation (in religion), he is cursed by Allah, by His angels, and by all the people. Musaddad said: Ibn AbuUrubah's version has: He took out a document."
[Muslim, Book #007, Hadith #3163] "So if anyone makes an innovation or accommodates an innovator, the curse of Allah, the angels, and all persons will fall upon him, and Allah will not accept any obligatory or supererogatory act as recompense from them. And the protection granted by the Muslims is one and must be respected by the humblest of them. If anyone makes a false claim to paternity, or being a client of other than his own masters, there is upon him the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people. Allah will not accept from him any recompense in the form of obligatory acts or supererogatory acts. The hadith transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr and Zabair ends with (these words): The humblest among them should respect it; and what follows after it is not mentioned there, and in the hadith transmitted by them (these words are) not found: (The document was hanging) on the sheath of his sword.
Question – Did the Companions of the Prophet of Islam ever took out processions, held lavish buffets and danced in the streets to celebrate Eid-Milad?
Answer – There is no historical or other evidence to suggest that the Companions of the prophet deviated in any way from the teachings and the practices of the prophet of Islam (pbuh).
[Quran 110:3 - TMQ – Asad] “extol thy Sustainer's limitless glory, and praise Him, and seek His forgiveness: for, behold, He is ever an acceptor of repentance”
